Hockey Mailbag: Are the Habs in on Johansen or Stamkos?

Q: Rumors are swirling around Steven Stamkos and the possibility that he will be traded and/or become a free agent. Is he a fit in Montreal?

A: I wrote a detailed article regarding whether the Habs should be interested in Stamkos, but I’ll sum it up quickly. If he is available at the trade deadline, which we don’t know yet, Marc Bergevin needs to throw his hat in the ring. The Habs are a legitimate Stanley Cup threat if Carey Price is healthy, but not as a currently constituted. They need a game-breaking offensive talent, and despite his poor stats this season, Steven Stamkos is that guy. I’m not thinking beyond this season, I’m thinking about a window in which only the Washington Capitals stand in the way of a Cup finals appearance (sorry New York Rangers), and the Habs need to add a goal-scorer. He’s going to cost a lot, and it might end up being too much, but they have to try. He can bring them over the top in my opinion.

Q: Is Ryan Johansen a good fit for the Canadiens?

A: I think it’s crazy that Ryan Johansen is available (which we aren’t quite sure that he is), because he is the top line centerman every team covets. He plays a solid two-way game, he’s a big body who can hit, he has a huge offensive upside and he’s only 23 years-old. I don’t understand what’s happening between him and the Blue Jackets. Things haven’t been right since his contract dispute in the summer and now he’s a healthy scratch. Is he out of shape because he missed training camp? Has he been a bad leader/locker-room guy during the team’s rough patch? In any case, he would be a great fit in Montreal, in fact I’d rather sign him long-term than Steven Stamkos. But at this point, I could see the Nashville Predators as being the perfect trade partner. They’re out of conference, they desperately need centermen, and have a plethora of defenders to trade, which is a weak spot in Columbus. But seriously, the Jackets would be nuts to trade him.

Q: Rumor has it that Anze Kopitar’s new contract will earn him $9.75 million dollars per season. Is that an over-payment?

A: If you value goals and points, yes it’s an over-payment. His career highs came way back in 2009-10 when he scored 34 goals and 81 points. He hasn’t reached the 30-goal mark since. The Kings don’t play a run and gun style, which makes a difference, because he has the skills to put up numbers. But Kopitar is such a valuable player in Los Angeles. He rarely misses games. He’s a big body presence that goes up against the oppositions best line. He is dangerous offensively, makes the players around him better and plays a strong defensive game. It’s a lot of money, I think too much for a 28 year-old who’s production is on the decline, but he reminds me of Jonathan Toews, who is also overpaid if you like lofty point totals. But there’s a reason why the Kings and Blackhawks win Stanley Cups and it’s because of these guys in the lineup. Anyways, if the report is true and that’s Kopitar’s salary, Stamkos must be licking his chops.
